C A T H E R I N E

SEPTEMBER 2025

I wasn’t sure why God was calling me to East Timor. I had never travelled outside Australia before and this wasn’t a destination I

would have chosen on my own. The culture shock from Adelaide to Dili to Bahareduk was immense, not only in the climate but also the differences in daily life and routines.

Living in community with 24 people at the base in Bahareduk was both a joy and a challenge. There were many dishes to wash and frequent competition for the bathroom. At first, we formed three distinct groups: the Brazilians, the Timorese and the Australians. Over time, shared meals, working together and card games brought us together as one large family.

This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and unity. Unity is not about ignoring disagreements or expecting everyone to think the same. It is built when we extend grace rather than hold onto pride, work for peace instead of allowing division, and put Christ’s love above our own preferences. With so many people and limited personal space, it was easy to inadvertently upset others.

One of the highlights was a walk to the river, where a stunning double rainbow appeared. I was also amazed by the passion and dedication of the YWAM staff and Discipleship Training Students as they faithfully served in their roles, spreading the Word of the Lord.

My contribution to the project was small, but simply being part of the team and being there to support my children as they embraced this

amazing opportunity was worth every moment.
